Why Am I Not OK With Board Anymore
I posted this to Reddit on June 22, 2020. This was a follow-up to the previous post
As said in title that is not the case anymore, I will try to explain and hope that it will not be that long.
Ali Koç presidency promised us a lot of things; financial overhaul, improvements off-the-pitch and with those their on-the-pitch reflections. Before I go on with the rest credit where it’s due, they have tried to change financial structure of the club. I’m not just talking about Ali Koç’s sacrifice but rather bookkeeping and transparency. I think there is still ways to go about brand development and bank deals but the path they have chosen was the right one. They audited the club as a whole and not just football branch, made bookkeeping compliant with UFRS, Burhan Karaçam gave in detail presentations about corporate aspects. These were all long due so on pure business and financial front for me they have been successful.
However, Ali Koç also promised us an overhaul on staffing and how club would be structured footballing wise. Talk about a fiasco.
Even before he was elected he was in talks with Comolli. I have no anger towards him for picking Comolli. As an Arsenal fan and an active PL follower I thought he was the wrong pick but the idea was right. Idea was this guy had connections in bigger leagues, worked in some of the best clubs in Europe so already knew how they were structured, knew what was needed in coaching department both for youth and professional level. That’s the right approach, your pick might be wrong but that’s not important, the method is right.
However Comolli resigned February 2020 officially and as we remember his tweets he gave his resignation in Feb 19, then just carried on with his work for 12 months, as it was required in his contract. Now this is total catastrophe for several reasons.
First, I am really curious how they have made the guy to resign in just 8-9 months. Ali Koç was elected president in June 18. Fast forward to 8 months later, his DoF, whom he stated he wanted to work for a long time, had enough of the management and resigned. Now this might not be entirely on management, Turkish media, being the xenophobe cunts they are, literally bullied the guy. I’m gonna say it again, I don’t like Comolli, I thought even before Ali Koç was elected he was a terrible pick. However management never supported him against Turkish media.
Second, I mean how incompetent you should be to not be able to find a DoF for a year? This guy gave the notice a year ago. You had 4 months until summer transfer window and a year to the point he officially resigned and you have failed to find one. It is June 2020, it’s been a year and four months and we still don’t have a DoF. You might state it’s Emre, (I think that is an incredibly stupid move actually not just stupid but plain wrong as well, but that’s a later point) however that doesn’t change the fact that there is no announcement. If that is your decision, then you have to stand by it. Make the announcement and say Emre is DoF for next year and we believe we will make improvements with him etc. It’s Comolli situation all over again, he will lack any support from management. These guys are unable to announce his role, I don’t think they will stand by this decision when there are criticisms, and there will be.
Third, as Comolli continued his duties, management failed to make him find a HoYD. David Badia has resigned last June, as he stated it was personal reasons, I am gonna take that at face value. People might get homesick and wanna go, that is not on management. However it’s been a year and we finally managed to find a second guy. Tahir Karapınar. Tahir Karapınar might be great, do not get me wrong I don’t know the slightest thing about him. That’s, however, the point. I don’t wanna be mean but who the fuck is Tahir Karapınar? When your first appointment to that position is David Badia and second is Tahir Karapınar, I’m just gonna go ahead and say you don’t have a clue as to what you doing. This guy’s biggest job as HoYD was at Altay (a decade ago), and as an assistant manager at Konya. Imagine having this as a career. Does Konya have an exceptional coaching we have somehow never heard of? I don’t remember a single Konya player making a big transfer, so what is this guy’s actual achievement. I imagine Tahir Karapınar laughed like at least half an hour after he got the job. This is equivalent of being a night shift manager at some local factory and getting a six figure job offer for a management position at Koc Holding.
This brings me to Emre. What has Emre done to deserve this position. I am really curious about this. His playing career is fine, but that’s not an essential thing, just a bonus. Emre has none of the essential skills though. I might be biased as a I loathe Emre, I’m not gonna deny that. However, as far as I’m aware, Emre has no badges, a minimal European network at best, has no business experience, has no legal, management, financial education. What is the quality that gets him the job?
At every step of the way Ali Koç presidency took wrong decisions. They have one more year but I have seen enough. Even if we do become champions this year, the way they have chosen is wrong. It does not matter how many steps you take are right on a wrong road. It is still wrong, I’m done with him and his board.
